PTERYGIUM
A pterygium is a fleshy overgrowth of the conjunctiva, which is the thin membrane on the surface of the eye. We can monitor this condition and refer to an ophthalmologist if required. A pterygium typically grows onto the cornea from the nasal (nose) side and can sometimes grow across the pupil and have a negative effect on vision. The pterygium may also cause a dry eye sensation, which may require some lubricants. The pterygium can often result in astigmatism, eye redness, inflammation, teary and itchy eyes. As pterygia are caused by UV exposure and wind, it is recommended that you wear good UV blocking sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat and eye lubricants as needed. There have recently been some surgical advances in the removal of pterygia which can serve to reduce the high rates of recurrence. At Tracton Optometrists, we work closely with ophthalmologists who specialise in pterygium removal surgery and can provide a referral.
